French travel phrases
These French travel phrases use vous, the polite “you”, which is right for shop staff, waiters and anyone you don't know; tu is for friends and children. French uses the Latin alphabet, and the pronunciation guide shows the silent letters and the nasal sounds. Say bonjour when you walk into a shop or café, and switch to bonsoir in the evening. S'il vous plaît and merci go a long way. In a restaurant the food list is la carte, while le menu is a fixed-price meal, and une carafe d'eau gets you free tap water.
Each phrase shows the English, the French and, in bold, a pronunciation guide written for English speakers.
