Hindi travel phrases

These Hindi travel phrases use āp, the respectful “you”, and polite verb forms such as kījiye, which suit shopkeepers, drivers and anyone older than you. Hindi is written in Devanagari, the script with a line along the top of each word, and the romanization marks long vowels with a line, as in dhanyavād, “thank you”. Namaste works at any time of day, and adding jī, as in jī hāṅ for “yes”, makes almost anything more polite. In cities, words like bathroom and card are widely understood, and many people say shukriyā for thanks.

Each phrase shows the English, the Hindi, a romanization and, in bold, a pronunciation guide written for English speakers.
