German travel phrases

These German travel phrases use Sie, the polite “you”, which is right for staff, officials and anyone you don't know; du is for friends, family and children. German uses the Latin alphabet plus ä, ö, ü and ß, and every noun starts with a capital letter. The guide writes the soft ch in ich as “ish”, the closest English sound. Bitte means please and also you're welcome. Restaurants split the bill as a matter of course, many shops close on Sundays, and still water is stilles Wasser, because the default is sparkling.

Each phrase shows the English, the German and, in bold, a pronunciation guide written for English speakers.
