Mandarin Chinese travel phrases

These Mandarin Chinese travel phrases are written in simplified characters, the standard in mainland China, with pinyin underneath. The marks over pinyin vowels show the four tones, and a different tone can make a different word, so it pays to listen to each phrase. Nín is the respectful “you” for older people and officials, and qǐngwèn, “may I ask”, opens a question politely. To call staff over, say fúwùyuán or simply nǐ hǎo. Toilet signs often read wèishēngjiān or cèsuǒ, and water often comes hot unless you ask for bīngshuǐ.

Each phrase shows the English, the Mandarin Chinese, a romanization and, in bold, a pronunciation guide written for English speakers.

Essentials

  • Yes

    是的

    Shì de

    shr duh

Chinese often says yes by repeating the question's verb, such as "有" (yǒu, have) or "要" (yào, want). "对" (duì) means "that's right".

  • No

    不是

    Bù shì

    boo shr

This means "that's not so". To turn down an offer, say "不用了" (bùyòng le) or "不要" (bù yào).

  • Please

    请

    Qǐng

    ching

Put "请" (qǐng) before a verb, as in "请进" (qǐng jìn), "please come in". To ask a favor, start with "麻烦您" (máfan nín).
