Bengali travel phrases

Bengali, or Bangla, is spoken on both sides of the border between India and Bangladesh, in the same script and mostly with the same words. The differences are everyday ones. In Bangladesh the usual greeting is assalamu alaikum, while in Kolkata and West Bengal it is nomoshkar. Water is pani in Bangladesh and jol in West Bengal, and loose change is bhangti in one and khuchro in the other. Both use apni, the respectful “you”, with anyone you don't know. Pick the country you're visiting, or compare the two below.
