Bengali phrases for Bangladesh

These Bengali phrases for Bangladesh follow the Bangla spoken in Dhaka, with apni, the respectful “you”, for anyone you don't know. Assalamu alaikum is the everyday greeting at any hour, the reply is walaikum assalam, and many people part with Allah hafez. Some everyday words differ from West Bengal: water is pani rather than jol, and loose change is bhangti. The weekend is Friday and Saturday, so Sunday is a working day. The script runs left to right with a line along the top, and each phrase has a romanization.

Each phrase shows the English, the Bengali, a romanization and, in bold, a pronunciation guide written for English speakers.
