Bengali phrases for India

These Bengali phrases for India follow the Bengali of Kolkata and West Bengal. They use apni, the respectful “you”, with polite verb endings that suit shopkeepers, drivers and anyone you don't know. Bengali has its own script, with a line along the top of most letters, so each phrase also has a romanization and a pronunciation guide. Nomoshkar is the greeting at any hour, and water is jol here, where Bangladesh says pani. When people leave, they often say ashi, a promise to come back, rather than a plain goodbye.

Each phrase shows the English, the Bengali, a romanization and, in bold, a pronunciation guide written for English speakers.
