Portuguese travel phrases

Portuguese is the language of Brazil and Portugal, and the two sound more different than they look. Brazilian Portuguese opens its vowels and says você; European Portuguese swallows its vowels, turns a final s into “sh” and often leaves “you” out. Everyday words differ too: a train is a trem in Brazil and a comboio in Portugal, breakfast is café da manhã or pequeno-almoço, and the bathroom is the banheiro or the casa de banho. Obrigado and obrigada work in both. Choose a country below, or compare the two side by side.
