Portuguese phrases for Brazil

These Brazilian Portuguese phrases use você, the everyday “you” across Brazil, which is polite enough for most situations. Portuguese uses the Latin alphabet, and the pronunciation guide helps with the nasal sounds, as in não (no), where the “ng” hums through the nose. Oi is the everyday hello, and tudo bem? works as “how are you?” and as the answer. Some words change with the speaker: men say obrigado and women say obrigada. In Brazil a SIM card is a chip, the bus is the ônibus, and takeout is para viagem.

Each phrase shows the English, the Portuguese and, in bold, a pronunciation guide written for English speakers.
