Turkish travel phrases

These Turkish travel phrases use the polite -siniz forms, as in nasılsınız? for “how are you?”, which suit staff and anyone you don't know. Turkish uses the Latin alphabet with a few extra letters: ş sounds like “sh”, ç like “ch”, and ı, without a dot, is a short “uh”. To call a waiter or a shop assistant, say bakar mısınız? Merhaba works anywhere. The person leaving says hoşça kalın, and the one staying answers güle güle. A quick tilt of the head back, with raised eyebrows, means no.

Each phrase shows the English, the Turkish and, in bold, a pronunciation guide written for English speakers.
